How to GET a Near Perfect Room Response

At the Indonesian High End Show 2024, we showcased a multi-subwoofer setup for the Praetoria (and Gaius) Bass system, designed to eliminate room acoustics issues and deliver a comprehensive bass experience as envisioned by artists and engineers.

The room featured four subwoofers, with two positioned at the sides and two in the back corners.

Each channel was supported by two subwoofers, ensuring nothing get lost in translation and perfect synchronization with the main speakers.

The Room

We were at Diamond 1, Fairmont Hotel Jakarta. The room dimension was W 5.9 x L 11.4 x H 4 metres, it is rather large especially with 4 metres ceiling height. Left wall was concrete, while others are a solid framing partitions, probably combination of plywood, aluminium and wooden based panels.

The System

Praetoria and Gaius were driven by our own Legatus Monoblock Amplifiers with our own properietary Bass System that consist of 4 subwoofers to control low frequency response in the room.

The Setup

We had never been in this room before, nor had we set up a hi-fi system here. However, the organizer kindly sent us all the relevant information well in advance of the show date, allowing us to plan properly.

When the time came, we executed that plan beautifully. Although there were small adjustments needed, overall, the setup day was a breeze.

The plan included speaker positioning, group seating and distance, placement of absorbers, a light box, LED strip lighting (since we didn't use the room's lighting fixtures), banners, and cable routing.

The Problem/s

As in any domestic room, Bass is the main issues, especially when we have a big speakers that can produce lots of bass energy.

Every room has it's own modal response (default response when the room gets excited by soundwaves) depending on it's dimension, construction, materials and situations.

Often the room response is not ideal, especially for Bass in an enclosed room.

Aside from the bass response, another issue is how long the bass stays in the room when it first got excited (the formal term for this would be a Reverberation Time), stays too long it will distort the next tune for sure.

Specifically for this room, it has different bass response between L and R channel as the left wall was solid concrete, while the others are not.

The Alexandria Audio Solution

After all gears, speakers and subwoofers were placed, now its the time to get them "sing".

We wanted to demonstrate for the attendees of how it felt to have a coherent, complete and holistic sound in any room! We believe that bass is the foundation of the music, when its right and complete then we can experience the full expressions from the music in front and around us.

There are 2 Subwoofers per channel were used and we placed them strategically at the side and the back of the listening zone, together with specific filters for the room, we successfully eliminate the room issues.

The Praetoria (and Gaius) with the Bass System successfully transformed the room into a realistic venue for every performances.

The Heartfelt Musical Experience

All the efforts above was to fulfill our promise for "a heartfelt musical experience" at the show and we are very happy for what we have accomplished! and more importantly, our Solution is repeatable in every room!!
